Animal Welfare & Human Values

By:Rod Preece,Lorna Chamberlain
Published on 1993-06-24 by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
ISBN 9780889202276

Synopsis
As the most populous province in Canada, Ontario is a microcosm of the animal welfare issues which beset Western civilization. The authors of this book, chairman and vice-chairman, respectively, of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, find themselves constantly being made aware of the atrocities committed in the Society’s jurisdiction. They have been, in turn, puzzled, exasperated and horrified at humanity’s cruelty to our fellow sentient beings. The issues discussed in this book are the most contentious in animal welfare disputes — animal experimentation, fur-farming and trapping, the use of animals for human entertainment and the conditions under which animals are raised for human consumption. They are complex issues and should be thought about fairly and seriously. The authors, standing squarely on the side of the animals, suggest “community” and “belonging” as concepts through which to understand our relationships to other species. They ground their ideas in Wordsworth’s “primal sympathy” and Jung’s “unconscious identity” with the animal realm. The philosophy developed in this book embraces common sense and compromise as the surest paths to the goal of animal welfare. It requires respect and consideration for other species while acknowledging our primary obligations to our fellow humans.

Animal Cruelty

By:Linda Merz-Perez,Kathleen M. Heide
Published on 2004 by Rowman Altamira
ISBN 9780759103047

Synopsis
Practitioners in the animal welfare field, law enforcement circles, and social services arena have often maintained that childhood cruelty to animals is a forerunner to violence against people. Does this behavior serve as a red flag with respect to extremely violent offenders, such as serial killers? Is it part of the cycle of violence associated with domestic abuse? Perez and Heide provide the first scientific examination of this relationship and examine issues of cruelty across different types of animals (pet, wild, stray, farm). The authors evaluate both qualitative and quantitative data to identify correlations between childhood cruelty and adult violent behavior, utilizing interviews and criminal records of violent and nonviolent inmates in a maximum security prison. Their findings will be of importance to a diverse audience, including researchers and practitioners in the field of juvenile justice, violence and domestic abuse, social welfare, animal welfare and animal rights and developmental psychologists and counselors, as well as law enforcement officers, district attorneys and judges, county and municipal officials, animal control officers, veterinarians, and school administrators, especially those concerned with intervention and prevention strategies.

Between Pets and People

By:Alan M. Beck,Aaron Honori Katcher
Published on 1996 by Purdue University Press
ISBN 9781557530776

Synopsis
Since the first edition of Between Pets and People in 1983, the authors' then-startling contention that pets benefit our mental and physical health has found wide acceptance. Evidence in our daily lives - in television pet food ads, in doctor's offices outfitted with aquaria - attests to how widely the belief in pets' therapeutic influence is now held. This revised edition of Between Pets and People, with additional data and case studies and expanded references - including a listing of Internet resources - and a foreword by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, analyzes the surprisingly complex relationships we have with our pets. This book contains an important lesson for everyone - to accept ourselves and others in the uncritical way that pets accept us, and come to terms with our own animal nature.

Animal Experimentation

By:Vaughan Monamy
Published on 2000-09-14 by Cambridge University Press
ISBN 9780521667869

Synopsis
What are the moral and ethical dimensions of animal research? What obligations do we have toward our animal subjects? In this important new book, students, researchers, and interested general readers will find a non-intimidating, readily comprehensible introduction to all the principal ethical issues and arguments in the animal experimentation debate. Vaughan Monamy covers the history and ethics of experimentation; discusses the moral status of animals and the obligations of researchers; and introduces alternatives to animal research. Although the work is aimed at those involved in the conduct, support, and teaching of animal-based research, its clarity of style will reach lay people and experts with equal ease. Monamy does justice to both the arguments that support and oppose animal experimentation, making this a balanced and objective study of a critical issue in contemporary biomedical science.

In Nature's Interests?

By:Gary E. Varner
Published on 2002-03-21 by Oxford University Press
ISBN 9780195348521

Synopsis
This book offers a powerful response to what Varner calls the |two dogmas of environmental ethics|--the assumptions that animal rights philosophies and anthropocentric views are each antithetical to sound environmental policy. Allowing that every living organism has interests which ought, other things being equal, to be protected, Varner contends that some interests take priority over others. He defends both a sentientist principle giving priority to the lives of organisms with conscious desires and an anthropocentric principle giving priority to certain very inclusive interests which only humans have. He then shows that these principles not only comport with but provide significant support for environmental goals.

ISBN 9781405171458

Synopsis
There has been a recent explosion of active concern in matters of animal welfare. The science behind animal welfare has progressed significantly, new codes of practice and legislation have come into to being, and innovative methods to assess welfare schemes for food production have emerged. Part of a major animal welfare series, Animal Welfare: Limping Towards Eden is John Webster’s new and groundbreaking work on animal welfare. Animal and Shaman

By:Julian Baldick
Published on 2000 by I.B.Tauris
ISBN 9781860644313

Synopsis
Many of the religious practices of historical peoples, for example the Huns, Romans, Turks and Mongols derive from much older Asian traditions. The Huns, for example, practised divination through examining the bones of livestock, something which shares many affinities with the Inner Eurasian tradition of interpreting the future through studying the scorch marks on the burnt shoulder blades of sheep. This comparative study of pre-Christian and pre-Muslim religious practices of Central Asia focuses in particular on the role of animals and shamans, as well as different forms of worship and spirituality among various cultural groups: Inner Eurasia, Turks, Mongols, Tunguz and Manchus.

Thinking Animals

Download Thinking Animals PDF/eBook

By:Kari Weil
Published on 2012-05-01 by Columbia University Press
ISBN 9780231519847

Synopsis
Animal studies has emerged as a major field within the humanities, despite its challenge to the very notion of the “human” that shapes humanities scholarship. Kari Weil investigates the rise of animal studies and its singular reading of literature and philosophy through the lens of human-animal relations and difference, providing not only a critical introduction to the field but also an appreciation of its thrilling acts of destabilization. Weil explores the mechanisms we use to build knowledge of other animals, to understand ourselves in relation to other animals, and to represent animals in literature, philosophy, theory, art, and cultural practice. Examining real and imagined confrontations between human and nonhuman animals, she charts the presumed lines of difference between human beings and other species and the personal, ethical, and political implications of those boundaries. Her considerations recast the work of such authors as Kafka, Mann, Woolf, and Coetzee, and such philosophers as Nietzsche, Heidegger, Derrida, Deleuze, Agamben, Cixous, and Hearne, while incorporating the aesthetic perspectives of such visual artists as Bill Viola, Frank Noelker, and Sam Taylor-Wood and the “visual thinking” of the autistic animal scientist Temple Grandin. Weil addresses theories of pet keeping and domestication; the importance of animal agency; the intersection of animal studies, disability studies, and ethics; and the role of gender, shame, love, and grief in shaping our attitudes toward animals. Exposing humanism’s conception of the human as a biased illusion, and embracing posthumanism’s acceptance of human and animal entanglement, Weil unseats the comfortable assumptions of humanist thought and its species-specific distinctions.

Animals and Society

Download Animals and Society PDF/eBook

By:Margo DeMello
Published on 2012 by Columbia University Press
ISBN 9780231152945

Synopsis
Considering that much of human society is structured through its interaction with non-human animals, and since human society relies heavily on the exploitation of animals to serve human needs, human--animal studies has become a rapidly expanding field of research, featuring a number of distinct positions, perspectives, and theories that require nuanced explanation and contextualization. The first book to provide a full overview of human--animal studies, this volume focuses on the conceptual construction of animals in American culture and the way in which it reinforces and perpetuates hierarchical human relationships rooted in racism, sexism, and class privilege. Margo DeMello considers interactions between humans and animals within the family, the law, the religious and political system, and other major social institutions, and she unpacks the different identities humans fashion for themselves and for others through animals. Essays also cover speciesism and evolutionary continuities; the role and preservation of animals in the wild; the debate over zoos and the use of animals in sports; domestication; agricultural practices such as factory farming; vivisection; animal cruelty; animal activism; the representation of animals in literature and film; and animal ethics. Sidebars highlight contemporary controversies and issues, with recommendations for additional reading, educational films, and related websites. DeMello concludes with an analysis of major philosophical positions on human social policy and the future of human--animal relations.
